Aalto University as Part of University Reform

Aalto University - Flagship Project in Higher Education Reform

The innovation university project, as the Aalto University project was known before, is one of the flagship projects in the extensive higher education reform currently being implemented by the Ministry of Education.

According to the Government's programme (15 April 2007), the universities' financial autonomy will be further extended. Each university can choose to become either a community under public law or a foundation under private law (e.g. Aalto University). In addition to the extended financial autonomy, university administration, leadership and decision making will also be restructured.

The increased importance that universities have as promoters of economic growth and welfare are at the root of the university reform. Universities are the most important public entities of the innovation system whilst in addition Finnish universities need to compete increasingly for funding and talents internationally.
