Give your ideas - name the new world-class university

The competition period has ended.

Give your ideas in naming the new university. Everyone can participate – students, personnel, alumni, co-operators, and the greater public. Participation period is 12-25 March 2008

Give us as many ideas for the name as you can think of.

The name should be based on the values and roots of the founding universities. The name should reflect teaching, research, being a front-runner, and originality.

The name should be applicable in Finnish, Swedish and English. Your suggestion can be in any of these languages.

Minister of Education and Science, Ms Sari Sarkomaa, is the Chair of the jury for the name, other members are representatives of students, personnel, alumni, and financiers. The name of the new university will be published in spring 2008.

Prizes are a Jopo bicycle, a Robot hoover, and book prizes.

Significant research funding to HSE’s Marko Terviö

Researcher Marko Terviö has been granted research funding from the European Research Council for the project “Talent and Learning in Imperfect Markets”. The funding totals just over one million euros for a five-year period. Terviö will begin his job as Professor at the Department of Economics in HSE on July 1, 2009. He is currently Assistant Professor at the University of California, Berkeley.

Universities Act provides good basis for developing Aalto University

On June 16th 2009 the Parliament approved the new Universities Act, which significantly enhances the development opportunities of research, teaching and artistic endeavors. The reform allows for the creation of preconditions for teachers and researchers to engage in tasks that correspond to their expertise and passion.

Graduate School of Finance to continue until 2014

The Board of the Finnish Foundation for Advancement of Securities Markets has granted the Graduate School of Finance (GSF) continued funding for the five-year period 2010–2014. The funding amounts to just under one million euros. Helsinki School of Economics is the host of GSF as well as the corresponding Nordic organization operating under GSF, the Nordic Finance Network (NFN).
