Kick-off workshop generates ideas for developing Aalto

Aalto University’s second kick-off workshop gathered about 150 participants to Dipoli.

Aalto University’s second kick-off workshop, open to all involved in the Aalto University process, was held on December 1, 2008. Participants brainstormed on policy definitions and concrete activities for Aalto preparations. The workshop was carried out by using the Learning Café method, which involves facilitated teamwork around separate tables and switching groups several times during the day.

Enthusiastic cooperation
The day was divided into three sections. First, a general discussion was held concerning the aim to develop Aalto University into a world-class university by year 2020. This was followed by discussion concerning linking education to research and social interaction. The final topic addressed the development of administrative and support services. Each section was preceded by an introductory speech while other opening speeches were held in the middle of the discussion. Interesting issues were raised by, for example, Low Temperature Laboratory Professor Mikko Paalanen, who presented top research cases from Finland and the United States, as well as TKK Researcher Elina Moisio, who explained what an organization must do to adopt an innovative approach.

In addition to collecting ideas, the purpose of the kick-off workshop was to create a cooperative culture and familiarize participants with others involved in the Aalto University process. This aim was successfully achieved, with auditorium conversations spilling over into coffee breaks. Diverse group composition ensured that participants easily became acquainted with new colleagues.

Alahuhta encouraged participation
The workshop was brought to a close with a speech by Lead Facilitator Markku Markkula, who also mentioned that the outcomes of the kick-off workshop held on November 7 as well as those of the December workshop will be made available on Aalto Wiki. This was followed by a speech by the Chair of the Board of Aalto University Foundation Matti Alahuhta who also lingered in the auditorium for a time to take part in the group discussions.

Alahuhta commended the workshop’s atmosphere and what he had already observed of the day’s outcome.
- The Aalto project has an excellent atmosphere of active participation, which is also visible here today, said Alahuhta.
- Aalto University wishes to invest in a student-oriented atmosphere, quality research and active international interaction, among other things. These goals are possible, provided that we make Aalto University a good place to work for all of us, Alahuhta summarized.

Alahuhta pointed out that the development teams hope to observe active communication throughout the preparation process. The inclusive nature of the working groups, Aalto Wiki and joint events generate lively dialogue between those involved.
- In addition, I wish to encourage those who are not part of the teams and who did not participate in the workshop to submit their contributions. In today’s world, Aalto University is an opportunity, and I hope that everyone will take part in realizing it, Alahuhta encouraged.
